This study of scientists’ data-seeking and reuse behaviour reveals how they discover and assess data quality to determine fitness for use for their specific needs. Using a critical incident technique, 43 scientists from biology, geology, and oceanography were asked to describe their most recent data discovery resulting in reuse. The survey used the FAIR Data Principles to frame participants’ data-seeking behaviour along a sequence of actions, which included finding, accessing, making interoperable, and reusing data. Scientists’ discovery and reuse behaviours provide considerations of fitness for use in the design of tools to improve findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability for both human and machine data reusers.
